Our friend by the pool. We think he's a brown anole!
What an amazing thing, to be down near the equator when friends and family back home are enduring a blizzard! I tell you, we did not miss the snow this week.
We visited some familiar beaches, got our bearings, and also made our way to some new beaches. We saw lizards, cows, horses, tons of dogs, and monkeys! We swam in the pool, went to the grocery store, and tried a couple restaurants.
We are working while here, so it's not a complete vacation. Our days are spent handling work issues, taking video calls, and squeezing sunshine in wherever we can.
Getting to the area of Costa Rica we are visiting feels a little like planes, trains, and automobiles. It's a 2.5 hour flight from Chicago to Houston, then 3 hours from Houston to Liberia, Guanacaste. Once there, we wait in an immigration line, then go through customs, then proceed to the shuttle to the car rental. We then take the rental car on the 90 minute drive from Liberia to Tamarindo/Playa Langosta. We were up at 2:30am, and arrived in our condo by about 5pm. We were exhausted and hungry, so we got pizza from El Sapo Pizzeria just around the corner from us. Not half bad!
We're staying a couple blocks from Langosta Beach. It's beautiful! Click here for more about Langosta Beach.
We went to sunset at Langosta Beach one evening. Sunset is an event in this town, and everyone's invited. Spend an hour or so after work just playing in the waves and watching the sun go down.
Our villa. It's got everything we need and then some. Plus the A/C works a dream!
This guy was hanging out in our driveway!
Visited an old favorite of ours, Playa Conchal!
A highlight was driving around one afternoon hunting for monkeys and then finding them! These, I am pretty sure, are howler monkeys. The males make a super loud growling noise that can be heard for miles. Check out the videos below for monkey action.
When driving around in Costa Rica, you never know what you're going to find. Google maps is not quite as reliable as we're used to, and sometimes a road that looks passable according to the map has been washed out and you shall not pass. Incidentally, the name for this street on Google maps is "calle en mal estado" which I believe means that it's a road in bad condition. I was sure I was misunderstanding the meaning, but I guess not!
Horses just chillin on the side of the road. Not tied to anything, just hanging out.
We made our way to Playa Avellanas one morning. Then stopped for brunch at a restaurant and hotel about 4 km away from the beach, the SoulShine. That was an unbeatable meal, even by Chicago standards.
